The Community Wellbeing sub-group was formed in Year 3 to focus on our wellbeing theme. The vision is “to make a more connected, healthier, supportive community with good links and information sharing”.
Four inter-related areas were identified:
- tackling isolation and promoting community spirit
- to promote and improve health
- to improve access to information
- to develop inter-generational links
We meet quarterly with agencies that work in relevant areas, and have a Health-focused drop in at the Harefield Hub once a month, attended by Timebanking and the local Health Trainer. We also held Community Wellbeing Fun Days in October 2015 (at Townhill Junior School) and in June 2016 (with Woodlands Community College). Additionally there were lots of Wellbeing themed stalls at our Autumn Community Day (October 2016), again at Townhill Junior School.
As part of our Wellbeing work, we support two Southampton Rape Crisis groups that directly benefit residents of the SO18 Big Local area – the STAR project that works with children in schools to teach them about healthy relationships, and a support group for women that have experienced or are involved in unhealthy relationships.
We also have a Mental Health Wellbeing group that runs once a week – Hand In Hand. This is a peer support group that is open to anyone in the local area with mental health difficulties. Hand In Hand is run by Solent Mind and funded by SO18 Big Local. Solent Mind are experienced providers of support for mental health and run many other peer support activities across Southampton.
We also awarded a Small Grant to Autism Hampshire to carry out some work in our area supporting families affected by Autism, and have links with Capable Creatures who organise monthly dog walks on the Common for people experiencing mental health difficulties.
