SO18 Big Local is now nearing the end of its 8th year! During the time of SO18 Big Local thus far, we’ve worked on a variety of projects and have procured a range of organisations, many of which we’re still working with today. These include Southampton Advice and Representation Centre (SARC), Southampton Children’s Play Association (SCPA), Learning Through Sport and NVR, to bring help, support and activities to local people.
Near the beginning of SO18 Big Local we helped provide IT equipment at Townhill Park Community Centre and we opened the Harefield Hub on Melchet Road. The Hub has become an invaluable resource in Harefield and is used not just by ourselves (for drop-ins, craft groups, youth groups etc.) but also other organisations such as Autism Hampshire, Solent Mind, Home Group and more, allowing our residents to access more activities and resources in their local area. The IT equipment in Townhill Park was used weekly at our Townhill Helping Hub, where people could come to get support with job searching, CV writing, housing issues and more. Sadly Townhill Helping Hub is no longer running due to Covid restrictions but we have since become involved with the SO:Let’s Connect project, which covers some of the same aims in that it’s helping people get more digitally connected..
During the first 5 years of SO18 Big Local we awarded over £90,ooo in grants to groups and organisations that had similar aims to ourselves and were working to make our area a better place to live.
We’ve handed out over 1000 “Bag A Lunch” packed lunches to local families, and we’ve run our very successful Mosaic Way project with TWICS. We’re working with Southampton City Council on improvements to, and raising awareness of, our local green spaces such as Frogs Copse and Cutbush Hidden Pond, and we’ve run many community events to bring people together.
Our recent “Where We Are Now” report shows everything we’ve done so far and what our plans are for the future – you can view it online here: Where We Are Now or if you would like a printed copy, please do ask.
